Converting Overseas Driver License

You can drive in New Zealand with an overseas license for up to 12 months from your last entry into the country. However, if you've stayed in New Zealand for over 12 months, you must obtain a New Zealand license as your overseas license will no longer be valid.

To begin the conversion process, visit your local AA office and apply to convert your international driver's license to a New Zealand one. The procedure may vary depending on the country where your license was issued, so it's advisable to consult the NZTA website for specific instructions.

During the application, you'll need to:

• Provide proof of identity
• Demonstrate that your eyesight meets the required standard
• Submit a medical certificate if necessary
• Present your overseas driver's license (with translation if not in English)
• Provide evidence of validity for licenses from India, Pakistan, or Tonga
• Allow the agent to capture your photo and signature
• Pay the application fee
• Provide high-quality color photocopies of all original documents, including translations

You may also be required to pass theory and practical tests as part of the conversion process.
